What are Inlays and Onlays?
Inlays and Onlays are porcelain fillings. These fillings are made with precision by our master ceramists. These porcelain fillings are bonded to your tooth in a way that adds strength back to your tooth.
In the past, there were only two options to restore a tooth; a filling or a crown. At Atlanta Dental Spa, we use inlays and onlays instead of crowns. This allows us to be very conservative with the amount of drilling and reshaping of your existing tooth. With inlays and onlays we only remove what is unhealthy inside of your tooth. We can restore and strengthen your teeth without having to drill away the healthy tooth structure. This is an excellent example of how Atlanta Dental Spa uses leading-edge, conservative procedures to deliver optimal care for you and your family.
What is the process to getting Inlays / Onlays?
The process is a two-visit procedure. At the first visit we remove the unhealthy part of the tooth, whether that is decay, old mercury fillings, cracks, etc. We then prepare the design of your restoration for the ceramist to follow. Our master ceramist then creates a beautiful porcelain filling to fit your tooth exactly. Your second visit will follow after a couple weeks, and at this appointment we will bond the porcelain inlay or onlay to your tooth.
Do you offer single-visit crowns?
Every day, there are advances in technology in this area of dentistry. The advances include making digital impressions (using a specialized camera to take a picture of your teeth from which a computer can build a model of your teeth for the ceramist), as well as “Single Visit Crown” procedures (a robot that can make your crown during your appointment so that you don’t have to return for a 2nd visit).
Atlanta Dental Spa has invested in this type of technology, however while the machines were pretty good at making crowns they were incapable of creating the high-quality inlays and onlays our patients prefer. As of today, the quality of machine-made restorations still cannot compare to those made by our master ceramists. As soon as we find new technology that will deliver the very best in quality and cosmetic appeal as our ceramist-made restorations we will be proud to offer that service for our patients!
