What Is Gum Disease?

Gum disease, also knows as periodontal disease, is something that 75% of people in the United States have had issues with. There are different varying degrees of gum disease, and it’s actually the most common reason that adults lose their teeth.

Gum disease is an infection in the gums, and therefore also in the bones once it gets to be rather severe. This causes bone loss down into and around each of the teeth. When that happens, bacteria gets into your bone and blood stream and can become a system problem, not just an oral problem.

DID YOU KNOW? At Atlanta Dental Spa, we offer leading-edge conservative periodontal treatments like Perio Protect trays to improve the health of your gums.

How Gum Disease Affects Your Overall Health

At Atlanta Dental Spa we stay informed of the latest scientific research available in the field of dentistry. We now know that if you have an unhealthy mouth you are at risk for developing serious systemic illnesses like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, pre-term labor, as well as auto-immune and inflammatory diseases. To learn more visit our Complete Health Dentistry page. If you already have a systemic illness and – on top of that – your mouth is unhealthy, it puts you at a higher risk of dying and developing crippling disabilities associated with your illness. Improving the health of your mouth can reduce your risk for future illness, reduce the negative impact your current illness is having on your body, can reduce the amount of medication you need, and in some cases can actually reverse your illness entirely.

How To Tell If Your Gums Are Unhealthy

A simple test is to vigorously floss between all of you teeth. Is there any blood on the floss? If so, you have gingivitis at least, and possibly more progressive gum disease. Healthy gums do not bleed when you clean your teeth with brushing or flossing. If your teeth and gums bleed when you brush and floss, you are at risk for serious illness.

Atlanta Dental Spa can help you reverse your risk and get your mouth healthy. Traditional dental offices do attempt to correct gum disease with processes that involve bloody, painful scraping of your teeth and roots. Atlanta Dental Spa has much better treatment options. We help our patients avoid deep, painful cleanings and gum surgery with our conservative custom treatments for unhealthy gums.

If you have been told you need a deep cleaning or gum surgery, we recommend you schedule a consultation with us at Atlanta Dental Spa.

Treating Gum Disease With Perio Protect

At Atlanta Dental Spa, we offer leading-edge conservative periodontal treatments like Perio Protect trays to improve the health of your gums. With make these specialized Perio Protect trays that fit over your teeth and deliver oxygen to the deep gum pockets around your teeth. It is in these deep pockets that the harmful bacteria live and cause a chronic infection in your mouth.

The presence of these bacteria cause your body to launch an inflammatory response targeted at the infection in your gums. The effects of this inflammatory response are widespread throughout your body.

Scientific research shows that this inflammation is harmful to your whole system and puts you at risk for serious illness. With Perio Protect trays, and other Atlanta Dental Spa periodontal treatments, we destroy the bacteria causing the inflammatory response, which promotes a healing environment where the body is allowed to heal itself.

Periodontal Antibiotics

Atlanta Dental Spa offers a wide array of periodontal treatments and therapies. We customize treatment based on your specific health needs.

One such periodontal treatment is the use of antibiotics in deep gum pockets. In order to ensure a healthy mouth, as well as overall health, the gum tissue that encircles each tooth must be healthy and free from infection by harmful bacteria. When this gum tissue becomes infected by harmful bacteria, the attachment of the gum tissue to the tooth gets destroyed. This results in a deep pocket around the tooth where even more harmful bacteria can grow and cause even more damage.

If you have deep pockets around your teeth, periodontal antibiotics may be the best option for curing this infection. How does it work?

An Atlanta Dental Spa hygienist carefully and strategically places periodontal antibiotics (like minocycline, or Arestin) in your gum pockets. These antibiotics affix themselves to the tissue lining the pocket and through time-release technology release the antibiotic to kill the bacteria. These antibiotics are steadily released for 21 days to ensure destruction of all of the bacteria. Once the bacteria are eliminated, the inside of the deep pocket becomes a healthy environment and your body can begin the healing process.

Neutraceuticals

Most people today do not eat the amount of fruits and vegetables the body needs for daily nutrition, function, and repair. In patients with gum disease, the gums are infected by harmful bacteria that destroy the connective and supporting tissues around the teeth. If these patients are also lacking essential vitamins and nutrients the body needs for repair, the destruction happens at an advanced rate.

In order to help reverse this situation and allow your body to heal itself, Atlanta Dental Spa may recommend that – in addition to your gum treatment – you take certain vitamins (called neutraceuticals) that are formulated to specifically promote the kind of healing and repair needed for the gums to recover from gum disease.

Using neutraceuticals as part of your periodontal treatment helps target the supporting structures of the mouth and teeth which assists you in healing from the inside-out.
