Choosing the Right Shade with Dr. Hamilton

One of the questions I commonly get when someone is interested in a smile redesign or getting veneers is, "How do we pick the shade?" We actually use a shade guide. When you're coming in for a smile design, typically you want to brighten things up. So, we'll first look at the shade you have and go a couple of shades brighter. Sometimes you want to be in the brighter range and sometimes you want to do a bleach shade! This is the common shades that we typically use for smile designs anyway.

Is it just as simple as picking a color off a chart?

What typically happens, and a lot of people don't know, is that teeth are not just one color from top to bottom. Usually teeth start off a little bit darker and they gradually get lighter toward the edge. So picking shades for a veneer case is not just picking colors off a chart - there's an art to it. You want to go to somebody who does smile designs and veneer cases on a regular basis, not somebody who just does it every once in awhile.

How do I know which veneer shade will look best on me?
